Health professionals are the backbone of every healthcare system. Today, however, healthcare across Europe—and globally—is facing an unprecedented level of complexity.

Challenges such as climate change, globalisation, geopolitical instability, infectious disease outbreaks, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are reshaping how care is delivered and how health systems must adapt. Building resilience is no longer optional—it is essential.

This is where the H-PASS project plays a vital role. H-PASS continues to support EU Member States in strengthening healthcare team skills and preparing the workforce for a rapidly evolving digital environment. But an important question remains: How do we make this transformation happen in practice? How can healthcare teams gain the right mix of digital and professional competencies? And how can these skills be effectively applied across diverse healthcare settings?

To address these questions, H-PASS has focused on upskilling the European health workforce through targeted training programmes. These programmes brought together a wide range of health professionals and emphasised not only digital competencies, but also the “soft skills” that are essential for successful transformation—communication, teamwork, adaptability, and leadership. After all, digital tools alone do not improve healthcare; people do.

Modern healthcare systems strive for effectiveness, efficiency, and optimal use of resources. Achieving these goals requires up-to-date knowledge, practical digital skills, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an open mindset toward innovation. H-PASS training therefore, combined technical learning with broader competencies needed for digitally enabled healthcare Systems.

Through this initiative, more than one hundred health professionals across Europe were trained to become Digital Change Agents—professionals equipped to support and lead digital transformation in their own workplaces. These participants received an additional training package designed to strengthen their ability to recognise opportunities, respond to change, and guide teams through digital transitions. Their role is not only to apply new knowledge but also to share it—helping colleagues build confidence and competence in digital health.

Early feedback has been highly encouraging. Many participants have already begun integrating what they learned into their daily practice, promoting collaborative learning environments and supporting their teams in adopting new digital approaches. These digital change agents are becoming champions of innovation and advocates for resilient, future-ready healthcare systems.

So, who are the digital change agents?

They are our colleagues on the frontlines of care—professionals committed to delivering the best possible outcomes for patients. They are motivated to contribute to a technologically advanced healthcare environment while keeping people at the centre of care. Most importantly, they are individuals who embrace learning, collaboration, and innovation to make the most of the opportunities around them.

Digital transformation in healthcare is not just about technology—it is about empowered people. And the digital change agents trained through H-PASS are helping turn that vision into reality.
